The Oman Professional League is the premier division of football in the Sultanate of Oman.

It was founded and inaugurated for the 2013-14 season, the first season of professional football in Oman football. The professionalization of the league was the first of many steps towards the complete professionalization of Oman Football.

The winners of the league are crowned champions while the bottom two are relegated to the first division with the third from bottom team playing a play-off against the third team of the first division in order to determine who will participate in the league the following season.

It’s inaugural season was successfully completed with Al Nahda becoming winners of the first season of the professional era.

The professional era has seen marked improvements in the standard of football and the overall competition management.

Improvements and higher standards applied from all aspects of the pitch from the pitch, refereeing and stadium management to the medical facilities, media management and commercial activities related to the league could be seen.

The OPL also brings a community focus to football, striving through its mission statement to become the No.1 league globally in contribution towards it’s community.

It has also opened a gateway for the clubs to the AFC Champions League, Al Suweiq playing the first qualifying play-off for the prestigious tournament in the opening season after meeting club licensing criteria.

The 2014-15 season will only take the era of professional football further, with standards on the pitch and off it expected to improve.
